From gingerbread decorations to butterfly roofs, Lawrence's tree-shaded residential real estate areas tender an array of housing. Neighborhoods near downtown contain a trove of 19th century Romantic revival and High Victorian Italianate, Gothic and Victorian Queen Anne styles.

Of particular note is charming Old West Lawrence real estate. First to be designated a Kansas historical district, it is still the state's finest example of an architecturally intact historic neighborhood.

Drive along any radius from downtown and you'll pass a display of traditional houses - bungalows, Cape Cod cottages, ranch homes and prairie and California styles.

With a fine school of architecture in the city's backyard, builders have been encouraged to experiment with solar- and ground-heated homes. Dominating Lawrence's west side is a 3,000-acre tract known as Alvamar that is populated by townhouses, condominiums and palatial homes - even a 36-hole golf course. Another 18-hole course called Eagle Bend is next to Clinton Lake.

For its student population, Lawrence offers a variety of duplexes, triplexes, condominiums and apartment complexes. The city's reputation as a good retirement site has spurred three new retirement projects.
